The Spanish Mastiff — known in Spain as the Mastín Español — is one of the largest and most ancient livestock guardian breeds in the world, with a history on the Iberian Peninsula stretching back over 2,000 years. The breed is believed to descend from large Molosser-type dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Phoenician and Greek traders around 1000 BC, and was subsequently refined over centuries by Spanish shepherds to guard the vast flocks of Merino sheep that were driven along the ancient transhumance routes — the cañadas reales — across the Spanish Meseta between summer and winter pastures. The Spanish Mastiff was the guardian dog of the Mesta, the powerful medieval guild of sheep ranchers that controlled the transhumance routes of Castile from the 13th century onward, and the breed's role was to protect flocks of hundreds or thousands of sheep from wolves, bears, and other predators across hundreds of miles of open terrain. The Spanish Mastiff is a massive dog — males typically weigh between 140 and 200 pounds and stand 28 to 35 inches at the shoulder — with a large, broad head, heavy dewlap, loose skin, and a dense double coat that comes in fawn, red, black, wolf-gray, and brindle, often with white markings. The breed is known for its calm, self-assured, and independent temperament — a dog that thinks and acts on its own initiative when guarding livestock. The Spanish Mastiff was recognized by the AKC's Foundation Stock Service in 1996.
